Part I

After reading, we'll discuss how all three of the assigned versions of Cinderella take on thecontext of location:

  • How do these Tales differ from the Cinderella that you have come to know? Be specific.

  • State the locations, what are they?

  • How does location play a role in the way the tale is told? Observe language-play, cultural-traditions, historical background, or any other elements that help to fit the tale into a Global context.

  • When reading The Chinese Cinderella, or "Yeh-hsien" (Tatar 146), what do you notice about the "Tomb of the Distressed Women" (Tatar 147)?

  • What does each of these tales show the reader about femininity, oppression, and cultural-misogyny?

Part II

Upon watching the 1985 CBS production of the Chinese Cinderella, "Yeh-hsien," select one, hyper-specific, scene from the short-film and discuss the following:

  • racial or stereotypical depictions

  • cultural prescriptions (define this phrase before discussing it in the context of the age-old tale)

  • the authority of the narrator

    • in this case, who is telling the story? How does this change things?

Use specificdialogue, images, and visual observations to formulate your response.

These three versions of Cinderella differ from the already known tales in many contexts. The ending of the tale I know was always a happy one and never discussed the fate or Cinderella’s step sister and mother. However, these three different versions of Cinderella talk about the end of the step sister and presented Cinderella as cruel person towards the end of the story (Tatar, 2017). This was quite unusual for me as I have always known the character of Cinderella as a beautiful and soft-hearted girl from the stories I have heard.
The locations in three different versions are garden, forest, home, hilltop, pond and many more such locations. These locations play an important role in the way the tale is told as these help the readers create a picture in their mind as they go through these tales and the readers start to believe these tales. The different versions of Cinderella make use of different language however there is one thing in common...
