PART B: Assignment Instructions






From a list of pre-selected topics pertaining to politics, students are to write athesis paperas part of the case study analysis assignment. The pre-selected case studies will be posed in a way that students will have to take an either/or position. Students will be asked to utilize a variety of respectable external sources in order to defend the position they have selected. The objective of the assignment is to have students realize the importance of research in putting forward a well-thought-out position, and to enhance their comfort with the ambiguity (i.e. the possible multiplicity) of truth and fact in a complex world.


The paper is to include the following elements:




  1. Athesis statementthat puts forward a clear position, and includes the two supporting arguments that will be used in the body of the assignment: 3 points, 1-2 sentences long.




  2. Astatement of contextthat outlines:






  1. The principal political actors and/or countries involved: 1 points, 1-2 sentences long.




  2. The definition of the central concept(s) in question. (For example, if your paper is about refugees then you need to define the concept of refugees): 3 points, 1-4 sentences long.






  1. Abodythat puts forwardtwosupporting argument. Using your research, each supporting argument should reinforce or prove your position. Each argument will be evaluated on whether they are based on research (your external sources) and whether they are pertinent to the topic in question: 5 points for each supporting argument, each argument should be a minimum of 6 sentences long.




In addition to the content of the position paper, students will be evaluated on their(4)
compositionin terms of the clarity of the wording used and the appropriateness of the sentence structure (1 point). Lastly, they will be evaluated as to whether the(5)
