Overview

For part 1 of the Persuading Different Audiences Project, you will complete a topic selection assignment in which you choose the topic that you will research and speak on for the rest of the semester.

Guidelines for Choosing a Topic

When choosing your topic, keep the following guidelines in mind.

  1. Your topic must be an issue of national or international importance.

  2. Your topic should be a broad issue, not an opinion statement (for example, “public transit” instead of “public transit is good” or “why you should use public transit”).

  3. Your topic should be an issue about which you are able to gather a substantial amount of research.

  4. Your topic should be something that you care enough about to speak on all semester.

How to Complete the Topic Selection Assignment

After you have chosen a topic, you can complete the Topic Selection Assignment by answering the following questions in a 1-2 page write up.

  1. Why is this topic important to speak about?

  2. Why are you personally invested in this topic? (Does it affect you? People close to you? Do you have experience with it?).

  4. What are some things you think people should be doing with regard to this topic?

You will be using these sources throughout the rest of the semester, so it is important that you select sources that that are both highly relevant and diverse (in other words, do not choose a bunch of sources that say the same thing). These sources also must demonstrate depth of research about your topic. Do not choose the first 10 sources that you find on Google lest you make the rest of this project difficult on yourself. Instead, research deeply so that you find sources that are credible and trustworthy.

This assignment the base upon which all your speeches will rest. You will not be allowed to present your speeches until the annotated bibliography is complete.

  5. All annotation questions must be addressed for each source.

What to Write in your Annotations

For each source, please address the following prompts in a brief annotation.

  1. Summarize the source in 3-4 sentences using your OWN words (do not copy and paste).

  2. Explain why the source is credible (1-2 sentences).

  3. Explain why the source is important for understanding your topic (1-2 sentences).

For this speech, you will be speaking to an uninformed or apathetic audience of your choice (you will identify this audience on your outline and in the journal assignment leading up to this speech). The overall goal of this speech is simply to convince your audience that your topic is important.

Keep in mind that this type of audience is unlikely to know much about your topic. This, however, does not mean that you will simply be giving an informative speech. In addition to informing the audience, you must also make sure that you are trying to convince them that the topic is important through the way you talk about them, yourself, and your topic.

This outline should start with full sentences and become briefer as you provide detail. As well, this outline should identify where you are using sources in your speech as well as provide a bibliography of your sources in APA style.

  5. Preview of points.

  6. Transition Statements

  7. Where you are using your sources (cite parenthetically in APA style).

  8. A bibliography of your sources in APA style.

What I Do Not Want You To Do

Your outline should not be any of the following things:

  1. A verbatim manuscript.

  2. Only main points.

PowerPoint Slides for Parts 3

For your all of your speeches in this project, you are required to create a PowerPoint slideshow to use during your presentation. These slides should guide you while you are presenting your speech as well as provide basic information to your audience. Your slides, however, should not serve as a script for your speech. That is, please do not read off your slides.

Requirements

  1. Your slide show must have at least 4 slides, not including the title slide.

  2. Your slides should cite information that you are referencing orally.

How To Turn In Your Slides
