For this follow up, the essay will deal with one Eastern United States Native nation /tribe of your choice that has lived and/or still dwells east of the Mississippi river.


In your essay you will describe the culture, history and people of this tribe in detail. You will discuss prior-European contact lifestyle/history/culture of this tribe and compare it to the post-European influences/contact changes to their lifestyle/history/culture.

ican communities commonly owned African slaves since, the colonial period and until the end of US civil war. As supported by Kettler, Cherokee, also known as North American Indians of Iroquoian lineage were once famous for one of the largest politically integrated tribes during the time of European colonization in America. It would be essential to consider that The Cherokee was the tribe famous for captivating most slaves during 1800s (Indians). 600 enslaved black slaves were reported to be held by this tribe and this number increased significantly during 1835 to 1860 from 1600 to 4000 slaves respectively.
Further, it was reported that these slaves were held for household works as a symbol of elite class Cherokee and only three Cherokee were reported to own more than 50 slaves. Cherokee’s Constitution in 1827 prohibited the slaves as well as their descendants, from owning any kind of property, or from selling goods or even from earning money (The Cherokee Registry). These slaves were not provided with any voting rights and heavy fines were imposed upon alcohol consumption.
