Paper Topic: The story of the integration of Little Rock’s Central High is a national story of great historical importance but also the lived experience of those involved. You can look up the “Little Rock Nine” on Wikipedia and conflicts surrounding school integration in the late 1950s appear in most U.S. history textbooks. But there is something very different about reading an individual’s memoir about his or her experience. For your paper consider how learning about a historical event through an individual’s memoir is different from learning about it through a textbook, a Wikipedia page, an in-class lecture, or even primary sources such as newspaper articles written at the time. Think about the benefits it offers as well as some potential drawbacks.
Paper Requirements: Your paper should be 4-5 pages in length (1100-1400 words), double spaced. It should focus primarily on Melba Pattillo Beals’ Warriors Don’t Cry, but draw substantively as well from at least two of the primary sources in this unit and use (and cite) information from the assigned online textbook chapter as historical background.
Audience: Assume your reader is an educated American but one who has not read Beals’ memoir or any of the other articles we have read for this class. You can assume, for example, that your audience is familiar with the Civil Rights movement but may not know of or much about the integration of Central High in particular.
Thesis statement: A thesis is a sentence (or 2, if they work together, usually at the end of your introduction paragraph) that clearly states your argument and your answer to the chosen prompt. This thesis represents your original insights.
