Paper Components

  1. Background. (a) Provide background information on a criminological issue or problem, including a brief summary (one to two paragraphs) of the problem, as most of your paper should be devoted to critically assessing how the issue is linked to your theoretical framework, (b) address what you will analyze about the issue, and (c) include at least two to three examples of the problem that will be analyzed through a theoretical lens.(10 points)

  2. Theory. (a) Discuss the relevant theory or theories that pertain to your problem, (b) include a description of the theory/theorist, theory origin and context (e.g., social, political, biological), and (c) address how the theory has been applied to this problem in the past.(30 points)

  3. Application. (a) Apply the fundamentals of the theory to the problem you have chosen to analyze, (b) including how the theory/theories explain the chosen problem, and (c) if the theory or theories fall short of completely explaining the problem. In addition, (d) address how might the theory predict the outcome (or potential outcome) of the chosen problem, and (e) why this theory (or combination of theories) is the best fit for your problem?(60 points)

Paper Objectives

  1. Critical thinking. The most important objective of this paper is to demonstrate critical thinking by applying one or more theoretical frameworks to a criminological problem. This means that one must go beyond the ‘surface’ of the problem and analyze the relevant issues surrounding the crime problem and how a theory or theories would explain the phenomena.

  2. Research. Students are expected to search online databases for articles that relate to their topic. It is expected that four to five empirical studies, in addition to course readings, from peer reviewed journals or edited volumes, and reputable news sources will be cited. Books from respected

academic scholars are also acceptable. Students should ask for help from the librarian if they are

unable to locate appropriate reference materials.

Preparation and Submission

  • Format. Document should be typed, double-spaced, 12-point font, Microsoft Word document with 1-inch margins, six pages, not including cover and references page, four to five sources, excluding the Siegel text, prepared in APA style. See Purdue OWL website:https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/. Label the document with the assignment headers and prompts along with your responses (e.g., Background, (a), (b), (c), etc.) so that it is clear what section of the paper you are addressing. Remember to cite the textbook if you source information from it.DO NOTcite Wikipedia or dictionary.com as a source.

  • Grammar/Composition. Do not include lengthy quotes. If a quote is longer than four sentences it must be paraphrased and cited. No "conversational language,'' and improper formatting (e.g., not indenting paragraphs, large spacing, misspelling, etc.). In addition, this is a formal paper. Therefore, "first-person" should not be used.

  • Plagiarism. Be careful to avoid plagiarism. Any information, other than common knowledge, taken from outside sources needs to be cited. Direct quotations should be placed in quotation marks; indent quotations that are at least four lines long. All text that paraphrases the work of someone else should list the source as a citation. For this assignment you will submit it toTurnitin. Papers will be uploaded into this system to check for plagiarism. Students should submit their paper into the system and review the originality report to check for plagiarism issues prior to final submission. This will allow students to address any plagiarism issues and resubmit their paper. Only the final submission will be graded. If a large portion of your paper is plagiarized (over 40%) it will result in an “F” for this assignment.

Introduction
In spite of all attempts made to implement equality of gender in society, American provinces are reportedly having strong and widely spread cases of domestic violence (Ursula, 2
011). In fact, there are multiple dimensions through which, domestic violence has become one of the most strongly rooted social evil across the nation. Especially in the context of women and children, the traumatic state becomes severe to manage, when cases of domestic violence appear before psychological and healthcare professionals (Maniccia & Leone, 2019). Women lose their confidence to build interpersonal relationships, when they go through intimate partner based domestic violence. Various theoretical frameworks have been applied to understand the major causes of this issue and to address domestic violence, ‘’emotional and physical wellbeing’ based support as well as preventive legal measures are the two frameworks that have established some resolutions.
Statistical Analysis of the Issue
At first, it is significant to note here that domestic violence appears to have as many dimensions as possible; it can be child abuse, intimate partner based or elderly abuse in families. Families, in recent years, have touched the mark of ten million that have been reported to go through some sort of domestic violence in a year (Huecker & Smock, 2019). “’ Financial hardship and unemployment are contributors to domestic violence. An economic downturn is associated with increased calls to the National Domestic Violence Hotline” (Huecker & Smock, 2019). Acknowledged as a crime under zero tolerance, domestic violence is still growing to an alarming stage. In fact, to define the issue, domestic violence or spousal abuse is more like physical or mental oppression of the partner with which, the individual is having intimate or romantic relationship. Considering the fact of romanticism and intimation, the state of physical and mental abuse becomes complex to resolve by law (Huecker & Smock, 2019). The stats of this issue in United States also call for a quick action which would be done in duo respect with law and alleviation of social values (Huecker & Smock, 2019).
In terms of statistical data, more than three million referrals are received by the child protective authorities in America (Huecker & Smock, 2019). They are mainly responsible for carrying out parental responsibilities to abandoned children that have gone through any kind of domestic violence (Huecker & Smock, 2019). As per the data reports of CDC, one out of four women and one out of seven man suffers some kind of intimate partner based violence during their lifetime. One out of three women and one out of four men go through sexual violence during their lifetime as well as there are five million cases of domestic violence that occur every year to the women above eighteen years (Huecker & Smock, 2019). The records show that the questions of domestic violence have now reached to the alarming stage and they must be addressed in the light of available social theories and legal frameworks as well.
