Pam James, age 23 years, tested positive for gonorrhea 6 months ago. She had no signs of infection, but her partner had been diagnosed and was being treated for gonorrhea. In this case, the penicillinase-producing organisms proved to be resistant to penicillin, and treatment continued with ceftriaxone.
