Social and Cultural Diversity
Diversity is the condition that is referred to consisted varied elements. As stated by Armstrong, Armstrong & Barton, (2016), Social and cultural diversity is referred to the circumstance whe
n every individual in the society, irrespective of the differences are considered to be as equal and are provide with equal opportunities. One individual differs from another in terms of varied cultural background, ethnicity, religion, caste, and creed, race and so on. Identity is a philosophy that indicates the general attributes of a person. Diversity is considered to be a part of the identity of a teacher. As for instance, classroom would be filled with diverse individuals who belong to varied backgrounds. In order to incorporate inclusive learning, the tutor should be treating every student as equal, irrespective of what cultural background or social ladder they belong to. In accordance to the oppositional theory, the learners tend to resist the class room culture when they feel that they do not belong or the culture does not match with their identity. So in order to provide inclusive learning, the teacher should be incorporating the native language of the students at certain instances. For example, the schools in Australia use the medium of English to teach the students. If a student from India is allowed to translate a poem or a story in the native language, Hindi, then the student would find a sense of belonging and would take part in the learning process.
It is important to accept the individual differences in order to promote equality and diversity and accelerate inclusive learning process. As opined by Hardy and Woodcock, (2015), A safe and positive learning environment would be created for the learners where they can be comfortable, hence enriching the learning process. Discriminatory practices should not be incorporated in order to promote inclusive education as it degrades the morals of the students and adversely affects the learning process. The tutor should also educate the students regarding cultural diversity so that they can gather knowledge about the cultural backgrounds of their class mates. This would also allow the learners to understand the cultural differences and respect the cultural sentiments of the different students. This would also reduce the chances of carrying out any bullying activities in the school as the students would be aware of the cultural differences and not make fun out of it to hurt the sentiments of the students. If such discriminatory acts are not practiced, then it would help to foster inclusive learning. As for example, if the classroom environment is culturally aware, the students would not make fun of a Muslim classmate who wears a hijab as it is a part of her tradition.
The use of technology can be included in order to teach a multi-cultural classroom. Google maps can be used in order to point out to the students about the varied countries and regions the students belong to. This would educate the students and make them culturally aware as the learners would get to know about the varied habitats of the people living in that area. I pads can be used so that the students can use Google translator to learn in their native language and take part in the learning process in a better way. The tutor can divide the classroom into varied groups and conducts activities that would promote diversity. The students who belong from varied cultures would be grouped together so that they can form a better understanding of the cultures of each other. Then the students would be asked to compare and contrast their cultures and collaboratively write a note on it. These practices, if conducted in the classroom would help in creating a healthy learning atmosphere, thus fostering inclusive learning. In accordance to the theory of Multicultural education, the tutors should be teaching the students by providing examples of the cultural heroes so that the students can relate to whatever is being taught in the classroom.
