Over the first three weeks of this course, students are required to consider the sustainability-related issues and themes explored in the course and REFLECT on how these issues intersect with the world of business. These reflections are to be presented in a reflective journal, NOT a research assignment or description or summary of these themes.

These themes (including issues, challenges, concepts and approaches) MUST be discussed in terms of their relevance and/or implications for business and MUST be drawn from those raised in class presentations, discussions and activities, resources provided on the course Moodle page and/or prescribed readings. Suitable themes for reflection may include:

· Sustainability, the Triple Bottom Line & business;

· The Six Forms of Capital used by businesses;

· The six phases of business approaches to sustainability (Dunphy, Griffiths & Benn, 2003);

· Examples of businesses successfully engaging in sustainable business.

In this assessment task, students are required to demonstrate not only their understandings of the themes but also their consideration of the implications for the business sector and/or the student’s current/future role in business. Students should provide their thoughts, feelings, responses, reactions, opinions and ideas on the material explored. Critical thinking should be demonstrated in these reflections.

While this task is not a research task, sources referred to in your reflections still need to be referenced using the APA referencing style. For information on the style of writing required, please refer to the samples and guides provided on the course Moodle page.

Interaction of the Sustainability Issues with the Business
In the modern times, the business scenario has changed. The mindset of the corporates has changed and there is due focus on the contribution of the business towards society and the environment. Companies are being judged based on their contribution to the surrounding ecosystem, rather than merely on the bottom line of the business. The six forms of capital are the core of every organisation and every organisation is expected to make the best use of all the six types of resources. In order to adapt themselves to the sustainability approach, corporates have to go through the six phases and no organisation can avoid these stages at the time of adoption of sustainability.
IKEA, Walmart, Unilever and similar organisations are classic examples of organisations adapting to sustainability with ease and having high reputation in the market. According to Breuer, Fichter, Ludeke-Freund and Tiemann (2018), the triple bottom line is one of the widely used parameters for comparison of various organisations and sustainability requires effective and efficient use of all the six types of capitals in the business. No firms can implement a sustainability approach with undergoing through the six phases and sustainable organisations tend to have strong leadership for effective implementation of such processes.
Relevance and Use of Issues/Concepts in the Business
I believe that the triple bottom line approach is one of the perfect parameters for comparison of business. As noted by Schaltegger, Hansena and Ludeke-Freund (2016), triple bottom line involves economic, social and environmental contributions, which in the real world is of prime importance. I think that organisations use the resources of the society and environment and hence it is the moral responsibility to give something back to...
