Our firm has been contacted by a local manufacturer that has suspended pipes between two buildings from cab1es.The cables are anchored into the block walls of the two buildings. The block near one of the anchorages is beginning to spall, so the manufacturer is concerned that the suspension cable will pull out One member of our firm is in the field checking on the capacity of the anchorage. Our task is to determine the horizontal and vertical components of the pull being generated by the cable. We consider the components separately because they are associated with different failure mechanisms. The weight of the pipes effectively acts as a uniform load on the suspension cables. Our co-worker has sent back the approximate weight of the pipes, which we have already factored.
a. Guess which component will be larger: horizontal or vertical.
b. Find the components of the cable force at the anchorage.
c. Comment on why your guess in part (a) was or was not the same as what you discovered in part (b).
