Other areas of the brain particularly related to linguistic abilities are Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area, both located in the left hemisphere. Studies of fossil end casts have suggested that Homo habilis’ brains indicate more development in these areas than is found in apes and the australopithecines, and Homo erectus’ brains are even more developed being comparable to modern humans in shape (Coolidge and Wynn 2009:103-105; Tobias 1998; Wynn 1998; also see Gannon et al. 1998).
