Originally, Descartes found it possible to doubt something as obvious as 2 + 3 = 5. But now he embraces the more complex and controversial metaphysical principle that “there must be at least as much in the efficient and total cause as in the effect,” claiming that the “light of nature” makes this principle evident to us.
