Oral presentations are our main topic in this final unit. From this exercise, you will get some ideas about what elements you might want to incorporate in your own presentation, so I would encourage you to complete this forum.
Part One:
a)SummarizePublic Speaking Basics:Consider the criteria that you think are the important building blocks of a good presentation. List the specific aspects of a speech or presentation that you think make the difference between an effective, entertaining presentation and one that is not as successful. Provide a short explanation of each element you want to look at. Try to be quite specific in terms of what you are looking for or evaluating when you watch a speech.
You can include different components ofspeaking skills(posture; body language and hand gestures; voice volume, pacing and pauses),content development(slide design; the use of evidence and examples; how the speaker structures the talk; how they incorporate storytelling techniques), and theconnection with the audience(how does the speaker keep the audience entertained and interested? does the speaker appeal more to emotion (pathos), expertise/authority (ethos) or reason and logic (logos)? how effective are these appeals? effectiveness of persuasive or argumentative techniques and calls to action?).
This semester we have an additional challenge in that we will be presenting online via video instead of in person. What additional aspects are important for people to consider when they are presenting using a video format? Looking on YouTube or other resources, can you find some good examples of excellent online presentations that are NOT presented in front of a live audience, but rather from someone's home or workplace? What are the secrets to success that these presenters are using?
b)Analyze Examples:Choose three talks from theTED talkswebsite and watch them. Using the criteria you listed previously, evaluate the speeches, making notes discussing the different techniques the speaker uses, identifying whether they are successful or not, and noting if there are techniques you didn't think of in your initial list of criteria. Were there any surprises or things you saw that you didn't expect? What did you notice while watching?
Try to be very specific in your evaluation and make a note of the time at which a speaker uses a particular technique.
c)Make Specific Recommendations:Based on your research findings, recommend thethree most important techniquesthat you and your fellow postsecondary students should use this semester to make your online presentations more professional, entertaining, and motivating.
Everyone is writing on the same topic, so try to make sure that your reply is unique and stands out from the rest. Try to give it an interesting spin. Don't forget to provide APA citations and references!
Part Two: Read two other people's essays and provide comments and feedback. What did you learn from reading the essay and watching some of the examples? Did you notice anything that stood out about the videos the person posted? What (specifically) did you learn that you can incorporate in your own public speaking?
