Elements
The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) began with the vision to
improve the overall well-being of the African people. The vision of AMREF was clear and
specific that made them forms an effective strategy that will provide a path for them to
accomplish their goals. The vision of making healthcare system accessible to all individuals in
Africa indicates a system perspective as a major factor for them in achieving their goals
(Department for Children, Schools and Families, 2008, p. 92). AMREF was able to have a vision
of those elements and their interrelationship in forming the committee.
The next element that resulted in the strategy formation was the intent focused that is
every member of the AMREF has the same objective, and they were focused on accomplishing
them that is improving the healthcare services provided to the people and making people healthy.
AMREF indicates the use of intellectual opportunism element as they were inviting more
volunteer doctors to serve the community (Lawrenc, 1999, p. 6). It provides AMREF to take
advantage of all the doctors’ knowledge to improve the overall services rendered to the
community. AMREF is providing independence for the doctors to act at their will but within the
boundaries of their vision and mission so that they can get best innovative idea to meet the
demands of the people.
The other major element that contributed to the strategic thinking is that they determined
the current situation and measured the gap with their expected future outcome (Lawrenc, 1999,
p. 7). It resulted in forming the suitable strategy that enabled them to accomplish the goals. The
hypothesis is another element that is present in the strategy formation because there was
analytical thinking and at the same time imagination about the society without any disease and
better access to the medical services for all the people. In this case, the Mintzberg model
developed by Liedtka is related to the elements of strategic thinking are relevant (Lawrenc, 1999,
p. 4).
Social development
Social development was the aim of AMREF as they wanted to change the living
condition of the people by providing better access to various facilities to the people. The social
development aims at improving the living state of the people in Kenya, and the company used
community-based approach. The primary aspect of social development was to implement the
WHO’s SAFE protocol (Department for Children, Schools and Families, 2008, p. 92). By
implementing the new protocol, they were able to provide access to good water that is used for
drinking and improved the living condition of the people. The aspect of social development
focused on improving the environmental condition of the people.
If the environmental condition of the people is healthy, then the level of the disease
occurred will reduce. If the environmental conditions are hygienic, then there are fewer chances
of any flies or mosquitoes etc. that spreads more disease to the people. Social development
