EDUCATIONAL ADAPTATIONS EDUCATIONAL ADAPTATIONS You have reflected on the adaptations that are helpful for a variety of special needs, and you have seen in action the adaptations and accommodations different teachers make. In this section, you are asked to consider the extent to which the school provides support to teachers and students in making adaptations to meet special needs. School Resources for Students with Special Needs: Each school will have varying resources on-site or available upon request to respond to the special circumstances of students with special needs. These resources include: human/professional resources such as psychologists or occupational therapists who may help in diagnosis of a student and in consulting with teachers informational resources such as reference books or on-line sites professional development resources such as funding for teachers to attend training or classes, or in-service training equipment/technology resources such as special chairs or special pens and pencils, computers and software building resources such as a resource room, aides, special rooms for in-school suspensions (considered a resource only if they function as more than a "time-out" room), technology that is available in special centers rather than at the classroom level Survey the school where you are doing your placement to see what resources are available to students and faculty. Reflect on what you see, including discussion of resources you feel are needed that are not available, or resources that are not used as much or as well as they might be. Include discussion also of whether school personnel access resources outside the school. These resources may be professionals in specific fields, or special training, or simply particular websites or State offices that might provide information not available at the school. On a page that follows this one, enter resources you have found at the school where you have observed. Include reflections regarding resources that are available and the extent to which they are used, and about resources that are not available but should be. PROFESSIONAL RESOURCES RESOURCES Parents: Parents can be a most valuable resource in working with children with special needs. They are their children’s first teachers, and are often the children’s most powerful advocates. Parents want and need to know what is happening in their children’s classroom and can be helpful in understanding issues that are affecting their children’s school performance. In addition, they can extend classroom lessons into the home environment. Here are some ideas to enhance teachers’ relationship with parents as resources. -Teachers should have parents’ contact information for each child. -There should be frequent contact between the teacher and parents, especially for younger children. Such contact can include -notice of children’s accomplishments, effort, improvement -information gathering--learning children’s home situation, things that may affect their school work -notice of concerns about children’s behavior or performance -invitations for parents to observe the classroom -invitations for parents to express their observations, concerns, things they are pleased with in their children’s progress -recommendations of books or activities parents might use to work with their children at home -a monthly or quarterly news page that lets parents know what their children are covering in terms of content and activities. [Notes teachers make about children can be subpoenaed. Be sure that all comments about children are objective and supportable.] Document the parent contact practices used by your mentor teacher. Reflect on what you see, and insert your observations and reflections directly after this page. Films on Demand- available through the Learning Commons databases at FCC Free to all students. Attached here is a lengthy list of possible options for fulfilling the hours you have remaining for observation.  You will note that the first page gives you films that are available at Frederick Community College; the administrator who distributed this resource believes most will also be available from the PGCC library, and the library is eager to be of service to our students during this crazy time.  You can access the library online through PGCC's webpage.  The rest of the current resources are from youtube.  You may choose ones you find there, or substitute others if you choose.  Please document what you watched and the length of time of the videos.  Your observations and reflections are based on historical rather than current observation. Here’s my user for blackboard if you prefer to use my school’s library or just watch it from this list or youtube. Section A
Children with special needs require that scale of attention which should be fulfilled
not only through the efforts of the teacher, but also on behalf of the school resources provided. In the context of surveyed school at first, it was seen that the arrangement for the newcomers was perfect. The child will be introduced to a room which is more like a log book, a place where he or she can record his first day experience at school. The placements of various toys and interactive learning tools can be seen operating through specific mechanism i.e. the placement of the learning tables, seats and picture carved over the walls of the room were perfectly in order. The adaptation technique functions well, when holistic approach is implemented and availability of resources is one of the complimentary factors to the concept of teaching children with special needs. The school environment fitted perfectly in this sense.
