One of the primary purposes of a criminological theory is to inform crime prevention and victim reduction strategies and policies. This is accomplished by examining the factors proposed by the theory that contribute to or cause crime and then developing strategies or policies that impact these factors.




Imagine this scenario: You are a consultant for the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). You have been asked to give a short presentation at their annual conference on the use of a criminological theory to inform policy.

Introduction
The scientific method for examining criminal behavior is called criminology. Political science, sociology, psychology, biology, and other multidisciplinary fields are al
l included in it. The classical school, the positive school, the ecological school, etc. are a few of the schools that make up criminal psychology. One of the first scientific theories in criminology asserts that among the best-known characteristics of criminals are both biological and physical anomalies. Sigmund Freud used the term "psychoanalysis" for the first time in 1896, and he based his whole theory of human conduct on it. From the psychoanalytic viewpoint, Ernest Jones later outlined seven key tenets of Freud's method, including the following: Delinquent and criminal acts are linked to abnormalities or faults in the ego or superego. Then there was Durkheim, who was a huge supporter of the sociological theory of criminology. Control theories and conflict theories of criminology are further approaches.
Objective of Criminological Theories
The objectives of criminological theories are to comprehend crime and criminology, be familiar with the various theoretical justifications for criminal activity, and be aware of the dynamic interdependence between various socio-cultural processes and factors and the formation and manifestation of criminal and delinquent actions.
