One of the physicalist’s arguments is that mental events (making a decision, feeling a pain, recognizing a symbol) always seem to be correlated with measurable brain events. However, does the fact that two things always occur together necessarily imply that they are identical? For example, every mammal with a heart is also a creature with kidneys. The two conditions always occur together in nature. Obviously, however, having a heart is not identical to having a kidney. How might a dualist use this fact as an analogy to explain the relation between mental events and changes in the brain?
