1. Background of the Myth Being Studied
1.1 Myth Studied
The myth that has been studied has been that old people are not interested in sex.
1.2 Describing the Myth
On a general tone, the basic myth that has been prevalent among the general people of the US is that older individuals do not enjoy having sex. It is also believed by the general community with very few expectations that the urge for sex among older individuals is very low and negligible.
1.3 Discussion if the Myth is believed by the People
From a recent study based on two different sets of surveys conducted among the younger adults in different areas including California and New Jersey, different sets of results with similar inferences are obtained. The majority of the people generally believe that the sexual drive among older individuals is low and that they do not engage in sexual activities.
Results also reveal the fact that the younger individuals and the media are also engrossed in the myth, stating very little about the awareness for sexual activities associated with the older age groups (Salter, Grammer & Rikowski, 2005). A negative vibe has been found to be prevalent when open microphone interviews are held in universities as they seem to underestimate the fact and do not agree with the fact that the older aged individuals do enjoy having sex.
2. Analyzing the Persistence of the Myth
2.1 Persistence of the Myth
The persistence of the myth has been evident in the context of a progressive country like the US, due to the lack of formal methods of awareness among the people. The media played a major role in this context. The US media has been found to portray very little instance of sex among older individuals through advertisements and media. More focus has been laid towards the provision of sex and the awareness associated with the people of younger age groups.
2.2 Historical, Social, Political and Economic Factors Perpetuating the Myth
One of the major historical factors perpetuating the myth that older people are not interested in sex is the fact that different architecture and monuments reveal the pictures and carvings of younger individuals engaged in sex and the older individuals engaged in enjoying nature. This has stereotyped the intellect among the individuals regarding the myth. Furthermore, social issues like retirement also play a vital role in determining the extent of the prevalence of the myth (Maggio et al., 2011).
Sex among young couples is enjoyed and cherished by society. However, in many cases, humiliation has been evident in cases of older individuals undergoing sexual activities. Political and economic factors including poverty also affect the intellect of the people, thereby affecting the development of the myth.
