Obtain an instruction manual for a piece of technology with which you are familiar. Before looking at the manual, list the visuals you think might be included in the manual and consider the role each of those visuals would play in making the manual usable. Then compare your list with the visuals that are actually in the manual and analyze the differences between the manual and your list:

  • For visuals that are in the manual and on your list, compare the role in the manual and the role that you defined.

  • For visuals in the manual but not on your list, evaluate the role and effectiveness of the visuals. Do you agree with the decision to include those visuals in the manual? Why or why not?

  • For visuals not in the manual but on your list, evaluate the role that you defined and the effectiveness of that segment of the manual as it exists without the visual. Do you agree with the decision not to include those visuals in the manual? Why or why not?
