Introduction
Improper eating habits amongst adolescents and children have been a common problem since forever. Today, many children are suffering from improper eating habits, which is forcing them to acquire malnutrition and the various kinds of nutrient deficiency diseases. Health literacy, health education and health promotion play important role in controlling the problem, and ask them to spread the message among another affected person. This essay will empower the targeted group of the population under the guidance of Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion in 1986.
Significance of Better School Canteens and Better Eating Habits in Children as well as Adolescents
People between the age group of 3 to 18 years old are the ones, who usually go to school and this is where, they are the farthest from the surveillance or guidance of their parents. This makes them skip meals, eat very less during lunch break and find more interests in the lunch boxes of those friends only, who bring fried or oily foods. Not only that, but also the canteens in the schools have equal contribution towards the malnutrition of the children because of the low quality of food they serve to the students, which is often not nutritious (Berge et al., 2016).
Nurses play an important role in empowering the targeted groups that is the children between 8 to 18 years to consume their food properly as well as their parents to ensure that the even younger children, aged between 3 and 8 years are entrusted with the nurses to make them consume their entire lunch in school. Besides, as suggested by Thompson, Watson and Tilford (2018), Ottawa charter in health promotion was the first international conference, which presents the charter for action to achieve health. Hence, this charter is used to support the need for better canteens and better eating habits amongst the concerned target group.
Health Promotion in Improving Eating Habits and School Canteens for Children and Young Adults
Health promotion can be defined as the process enabling people to increase the control over their health. It helps in improving the health of the person. As mentioned by Murdaugh, Parsons and Pender (2018), it aims to improve the health of the society instead of focussing on one individual. It moves the focus towards a wide range of social and environmental interventions. It is a behavioural social science that concluded from the biological, physical, psychological, environmental and medical science to promote health and prevent diseases. It aims to prevent disability and premature death through education-driven voluntary behaviour change.
Building Healthy Public Policy
Health promotion aims to work through systemic strategy. The purpose of health promotion is to influence the health behaviour of the people positively. Health promotion includes healthcare and the policies, which make sure that the policy makers ensure the implementation of the healthcare. As noted by Hornik (2018), health promotion drives to reduce the growing burden of chronic disease caused due to malnutrition such as obesity and bulimia.
Reorienting Health Services
Active awareness of the population, with the help of health promotion, is a strategy for this prevention and improvement in the health of the children. As informed by...
