Introduction
The mental health assessment is a procedure that assesses the emotional wellbeing through a
series of examination and questions. The main aim of the essay is to design a mental health assessment to diagnose the condition that is faced by the individual due to the mental health challenge. These conditions include schizophrenia, eating disorder, psychotic illness and post-natal depression.
In the current study, the character John Nash in the film ‘The Beautiful Mind’ will be evaluated. The story was based on the renowned mathematician John Nash who was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the year 1950 at the age of 30 years. While Nash was suffering from the condition, he made some of the groundbreaking contributions in the field of mathematics, which included the game theory and the mathematics behind the decision-making process.
However, as the disease progressed, Nash started showing symptoms of paranoia, delusion a bizarre behaviour, which indicated strong symptoms of schizophrenia. Following his symptoms, he was hospitalized for several numbers of times and was on strong anti-psychotic medications. In the 1980s nevertheless, Nash at the age of his 50s reported that he has overcome his psychotic symptoms.
There had been several ideas and conceptions related to the recovery of a schizophrenia patient. According to researchers, there are various factors that contribute to the linked outcome of the schizophrenic condition. Nash showed most of these factors which he was suffering from the schizophrenic condition. At shown in the film 'The Beautiful Mind' Nash was found to suffer from hallucinations as well as delusions.
Aetiology and Pathophysiology of the Mental Illness, Relation with the Main Character
The schizophrenia had been identified as a multifactorial condition, which is known to have multiple large and small impacts. The larger impacts are caused by susceptible genes that interact in different environmental conditions. As observed by Dynda and Perdana (2017), some of these etiological factors results in the development of alterations within the neuroplasticity manifested through a cascading neurotransmitter as well as circuit dysfunctions.
It has also been observed that there are several environmental aspects, which include antenatal viral infection in the mother, complications in obstetrics resulting in hypoxia (Weinstein et al., 2017). Moreover, development of stress during the time of the neurodevelopment can also result in the schizophrenia in the individuals like John Nash. Genetic studies have revealed that the schizophrenic condition has a genetic origin consisting of a spectrum of disorder with various phenotypic expression.
There are several proofs available that highlights that the deficit and psychotic symptoms like conditions inherited in the schizophrenic spectrum of individuals (Oestreich et al., 2017). The film highlights that Nash’s initial sign of illness appeared when he started teaching in the years 1958 at Massachusetts Institute. As stated by O’Hara (2019), he was observed to disappear for several days and return with no explanation for his disappearance. Further, during his lectures, he used to go into long reveries and he was observed to make meaningless statements that reflected to be symptoms of paranoia.
One such behaviour was Nash stopped allowing visitors entering into his office or stand close to him and the door. He always had the feeling of being followed. His erratic behaviour was assumed by many as nervous breakdown and this was a time when his wife Alicia decided to get psychiatric help when Nash's behaviour and conversation consistently reflected his disturbed mental condition. According to brain imaging as well as neuropathological study, there are certain related signs of schizophrenia that have highlighted the dysfunction of certain parts of the brain and its circuits.
As observed by Singh et al. (2016), it has been observed that the individual showing schizophrenic symptoms have a considerable reduction in the grey matter of the brain within the irregularities appearing within the white matter. With the decrease in the grey matter occurs throughout the progression of the schizophrenic condition. Even there were instances when Nash was a student some of his disillusion was apparent within the audience when John found himself with a roommate Charles despite his room being made for a single person.
According to Taufiq and Wiranita (2018), one of the aspects that emphasis Nash’s psychotic behaviours were the dysfunctional dopaminergic neurotransmission that resulted in a hallucination. According to the researchers, the pharmacological indications reveal that the dopaminergic dysfunction theory at times is questionable when the full ranges of clinical manifestations are observed. According to Taufiq and Wiranita (2018), there are disturbing Glutamatergic attributes, which imply biological processes reflecting clinical features like cognitive dysfunction.
The psychiatrists who were treating Nash concluded with a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenia. As supported by Geretsegger et al. (2017), paranoid schizophrenia, which was reflected by patients, had a complex system of delusions, which were not only persecutory but also grandiose. The doctors insisted that the condition and symptoms showed by Nash were based on the illness John Nash had earlier in his life. To some researcher, this latent pressure, which resulted in the psychotic exhibition, could have been his newly acquired fatherhood or the latent homosexuality within him.
Mental Health Assessment, Treatment and Interventions for Support
Some of the health assessments that reflect schizophrenia include catatonic behaviour, a disorganized condition that includes hallucinations and reducing the level of functioning and lack of the ability to maintaining an interpersonal relationship (Searles, 2018). Nash when he used to work in the institute, he was called the phantom of Fine hall, as he was often observed prowling along the college halls scribbling arcane and intricate mathematical formulae.
Again, there was this one phase when Nash travelled at a different part of Europe convincing the European government in granting him refugee status. There were times when Nash obsessively occupied himself in analyzing different sections of...
