Notes on Chapter Six: Facts
· A claim is the concept that author tries to prove in his or her ar
gument.
· Claim is the first part that author makes in order to convince the audience.
· Claim is the concluding statement, the main idea that author makes in the form of thesis presented in the writing.
· Claims are of three types in general; claims of facts, values and policy.
· Claim of fact asserts that the condition given by the author either exists or it will exist in future because it is based on factual evidences. Example; Hitler rose to power during World War II and became the source of Holocaust.
· These evidences are proved by author in the later part of his or her writing.
· Claims of value are either desirable or undesirable; they depend on the morality and ethical value of the argument made by the author. Example; Swimming has become a fitness trend in youngsters these days.
