Introduction
It is not nearly as big as the continental United States, but Australia is an island continent in the Southern Hemisphere.
It has a population of around 18 million people, the most of whom reside along the eastern shore in many sizable metropolises.
It is a Western developed nation that British colonists founded in the late 1700s and early 1800s.But this "settlement" forced the continent's indigenous peoples, who had lived there for at least 40,000 years, to leave, and occasionally they describe the arrival of the British as an invasion of their territory.
A democracy modeled on the British Westminster system is used for governance. The Commonwealth (federal), State and Territory (seven states and two territories), and municipal agencies are only a few of the various levels of governance.

Nursing as a profession within the Australian Healthcare system
Any attempt to be precise and definitive about a single conceptualization would be problematic; yet, the British nursing tradition has had a significant effect on nursing in Australia.
Australia's conception of nursing has been shaped by developments in North America as well as by British traditions. Australia also makes use of nursing definitions established on the International Council for Nursing. The competency statements of the Australian Nursing Council Inc. provide definitions of a starting nurse on a national level.
The idea that nurses are interested in how people react to health and sickness is widely accepted. The dedication of the Australian nursing profession to understanding the "human response" components of health and health care delivery is demonstrated by the degree to which Australian nurses have embraced research into the experience of sickness.
