Note any cognitive or emotional shifts you felt in terms of your reactions to treating a survivor or perpetrator of rape.

1. Sharon is a 40-year-old female who has had two previous addiction treatments. She has come to counseling because of work complaints: She has difficulty communicating with her supervisor. Sharon states that the stress is so high at her work that she often thinks about using alcohol/drugs. As she talks in counseling about her supervisor, she mentions that he looks a lot like her uncle, who sexually abused her from ages 8 to 12. When encouraged to talk more about her concerns, she describes her problems with her supervisor with intense affect, but describes her childhood sexual abuse with a sharply contrasting flat affect. She states that she does not want to discuss her childhood experiences any more during the session. The day after her first counseling session, she calls you in the early morning, crying heavily. She reports sleeping only for brief periods during the night, wakened by nightmares of her uncle sexually abusing her. She states she is afraid that she will return to using alcohol and drugs.
