[Nota bene: Both the prewriting step and the firs/freewrite/rough draft of this essay will be QUIZ GRADES, and other steps of the writing process might be too. [N.B.: Well before the final draft of the following essay is due, there will be a separate summative-grade assignment to present four scholarly sources in an annotated bibliography, and you will receive directions for that separately.] [N.B.: You may start most of the items below without having finished reading or viewing both texts.] [N.B.: The written texts of both plays, for the record, are in the “Shakespeare” folder under “Course Documents” on Blackboard.] Directions for ENG 112 Research Paper #2: Expository Essay A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tragedy of Macbeth --The essay must be in MLA format. --The essay must be 1,800-3,000 words long. (As a side note: I will allow your works cited page to count toward the word count; however, most professors will NOT, so you should get in the habit of asking them every time. Also, when a professor gives a page count instead of a word count, almost no professor will count your works cited page toward your page count, even though it must have a page number on it. Just some things to know.) --(Note: The word “four” is a motif in these instructions below.) --This expository essay will have four sections, for which all but the 1st section must be labeled with section headings. The four sections must respectively fulfill the following: · 1st section: An overall introduction to the paper. Including an overall thesis: · The thesis states the purpose of the paper and its sections. For example, the purpose of the paper is to compare and contrast the two plays, to describe the causes to some of the effects (events) in the plays, and to present problems with/within the play(s) and offer potential solutions to them. · The remaining sections of the paper cover these exact things, in this exact order. · 2nd section: Compare and contrast both plays, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Macbeth: · The compare and contrast section must clearly show through details and examples how the two plays are both similar and different, using an intro into the section, several or more body paragraphs, a conclusion to the section, and an overall logical organization to the connections, statements, facts, and analysis made in the section overall. · 3rd section: Make a cause and effect argument about one of these plays (it is your choice of which one): · The cause-and-effect section must explain how a particular cause (or several) produces a particular effect/event (or several) in one of the two plays (again, which play is your choice). · In this section, you must give examples and other details that support your main idea/argument. · In your explanation of cause and effect, your transitions from idea to idea (and/or the logical organization of the section) must show how different occurrences in the play are linked to one another (for this is the essence of cause and effect). · 4th section: Make a problem-and-solution argument about one of these plays (again, which play is your choice): · The problem-and-solution section must clearly state a problem in/with one of the plays, identify the most important aspects of it, present one or more possible solutions, support each solution with specific details and logical reasons, and be logically organized overall. --The essay must quote/paraphrase (and cite) the two primary sources (the two plays) abundantly. --The essay must quote/paraphrase (and cite) at least four scholarly secondary sources from the MyNOVA databases. · Note: There will be a separate summative assignment to present four scholarly sources in an annotated bibliography, and you will receive directions for that separately · Whenever you turn in a bibliography, the hope is that you can use those items in your paper later, but there is no guarantee that the items will ultimately be as useful to you as you had hoped. · Research is a search after all. · And if your annotated bibliography items do not work out for you in the end, then you must find more secondary sources from the MyNOVA databases, for your essay must quote/paraphrase (and cite) at least four scholarly sources. --You must use at least four super-scholarly vocabulary words (what used to be called SAT words). You must use them correctly. Also, you must HIGHLIGHT these words on the final draft. Make it colorful and beautiful. Any colors are fine. One color is fine.
