Personal Case Study – (15%) This assignment relates to the following Course Learning Requirements: CLR 1: Compare major groups of fungi and their impact on current human affairs. CLR 2: Summarize the roles of fungi in natural systems. CLR 3: Explore the industrial application of fungi and their bi-products. CLR 4: Contrast the historical use of fungi in different cultures. CLR 5: Select, critically assess and document information using accepted citation principles. Objective of this Assignment: Fungi are involved in world affairs. Organizations see them as commodities. Science imagines medical cures from fungal bi-products, Others see fungi as major players, involved in the complex interactions of ecosystems. What about our lives on a more personal and direct level? Fungi affect us too. Your task for this personal case study is to do some research on fungi that presently, or will in the future, affect your life at a personal/professional level. This impact of fungi, could be from a number of areas, including food, forest, medicine, industry, fashion, art, history, etc. Pre-Assignment Instructions: 1. Read and review previous course materials, particularly units 2-4 describing roles of fungi and module 14 which details how we can learn from our environment. Assignment Tasks: 2. Provide 5 images, or a short video, taken from your phone, or documented from another source, as examples of fungal issues. a. For example, you could take a picture of moldy bread, as a basis of human health issues. A picture of a fungus on a tree, is evidence of a decomposer that will eventually turn the tree back into healthy soil. You may take an image of beer, bread, regarding the role of yeast in food, etc. If you use images that you did not take or create yourself, you MUST cite them according to APA standards. b. Be sure to include things that affect you personally or may affect you professionally after you graduate. Connect the slides to the issues. 3. Design a PowerPoint slide deck (presentation), or short video incorporating your photos as images. 4. Ensure that your slide-deck, or video contains: a. A title slide (course code and title, your name and student number, title of your presentation) b. An overview slide describing how environmental issues affect your life. A video or five (5) body slides, containing the images that you have gathered. c. A few sentences or points per photo slide identifying why or how the images relate to fungi and your world. Make sure to connect this to the course material and terms. d. A few sentences or points per photo slide linking each picture to your personal and/or professional life. e.
