Materialism makes people prioritize material objects over spiritual, emotional and ethical values. Materialistic people values money more than anything does. Economic status is so important for them that they can even compromise relationships for sustaining economic status. Materialism is a topic that is widely used in English literature by many English novelists. English novelist Jane Austen used to display materialism is her novels. Materialism was one of the genres of Jane Austen’s novels. She primarily analysed and criticised the British society of the 18th century through her novels. Most of the Jane Austen’s novels were based on women’s dependency on marriage to find a favourable social status and economic security. Jane Austen beautifully portrayed materialism in her novel Northanger Abbey. Women’s insecurity regarding wealth and her dependency on marriage to secure economic stability was shown in Northanger Abbey. In this assignment, we will see how Jane Austen portrayed materialism in her novel Northanger Abbey through various characters.

She lives with her parents and siblings in Fullerton. Initially Catherine Morland is a shy tomboy. Later she has developed herself as a lovely and gorgeous young woman, who is appropriate in conducting and prospering social abilities. The Allens are a childless yet wealthy neighbourhood couple, who has welcomed Catherine to go with them to Bath on the summer vacations for a month to have a peaceful rest. Catherine having her parent’s consent goes to Bath with the Allens. Catherine goes to different social gatherings in the Bath. Thus, she has extended her boundary of acquaintance.
