Comparing the Past and the Present
When going through history, we often come across events that we can compare to events that are occurring currently in our life. T
his makes us notice how history, in so many aspects, repeats itself. This paper discusses eight such pairs of events that I could connect between our course and events during my life.
The first event that I could connect was the impeachment of President Johnson. While going through his impeachment order, I was reminded of the impeachment order against former US President, Donald Trump. President Johnson was to be impeached for more than one reason. First, he had a prickly personality and we notice that in Donald Trump as well. Second, Johnson believed in White Supremacy and we find Donald Trump equally racist. All in all, both received order for impeachment and barely survived. Johnson, however, became cautious after his impeachment trial but Trump didn’t change. He remained the same until he left office.
The next event is that of racism and eventual ban on Chinese immigration. I could compare that to the increasing restriction imposed by the Trump administration on the immigrants in America. The immigrants and people of colour faced a lot of racism in the 19th century both in people’s attitudes as well as job opportunities just as they face today. A lot of this is faced by the Chinese, even those who have been naturalized in the country. A difference between both the situations would be that the Chinese then couldn’t get good job opportunities but the Chinese today have adequate scope for jobs.
