Nida is a 14-year-old female student of Pakistani heritage. Though forbidden in her family’s culture, as arranged marriage is expected, she is secretly dating. One day, Nida divulges her secret to her female counselor, who shares the similar ethnic background. The counselor understands that severe punishment (e.g., beating) is not uncommon for such infractions. Nonetheless, in keeping with her interpretation of ACA and ASCA ethical guidelines, the counselor honors Nida’s confidentiality and right to “Autonomy.” Furthermore, the counselor also believes it would be wrong for her to interfere with Nida’s parents’ response. Accordingly, when the counselor hears in the community about Nida’s dating, before Nida hears of it, the counselor remains silent.
