Task

This assessment aims to develop and gauge student understanding of the key topics covered so far by answering the following questions. Answering these questions will help you build some understanding for the next assessment item as well as for the entire subject. It is expected that answers to the assignment questions be succinct (i.e. precise and concise) with all sources of information fully referenced as per APA referencing style. You have to reference the text book and any additional material you have used in your answers.
Note that the guide for APA referencing is provided in the resources section of Interact site of this subject.

Answers MUST be written in your own words. No marks will be awarded for any answer that contains more than 10% direct quote (referenced or unreferenced). One or two sentence answers will be too short and only receive low marks. Answers longer than 1.5 pages (12 point font, single line spacing) may incur a penalty if too much non-relevant information is stated. For mathematical questions it is expected that you show intermediate steps of your working. Just stating the correct solution will result in low marks, on the other hand if the working is correct and you only made minor mistakes, you will still be awarded marks, even though the final answer is wrong.

Question 1 [3 Marks]

Compare and contrast the OSI reference model with the TCP/IP networking model. Which one do you think is more useful when working with and describing networks and why?

Question 2 [3.5 Marks]

Complete the following Hands-On Projects from the prescribed textbook (Pyles, Carel & Tittel 2017)

  • Hands-On Project 2-3

  • Hands-On Project 2-5

In order to complete this activity, students should insert screenshots in the assignment document along with a short description of each step taken to complete the project.

Question 3 [3.5 Marks]

Briefly describe the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP). What is the purpose of the ARP Cache?

Question 4 Case study task
[5 Marks]

In your role as a Solutions Architect at Foreshore IT Solutions, you are leading a team of several system administrators. Foreshore IT Solutions is a medium sized organisation and is currently expanding its operations. The company has acquired six sites across Adelaide to accommodate its various departments. You have been asked to design a network by utilizing 10.0.0.0 private IP address.Your designed network should span six sites with a router at each site to interconnect the entire network. It is assumed that each site will have its own single subnet. Company expects approximately 1200 workstation across all the sites with approximate numbers in each building as follows:

Finance Office - 260 workstations
IT Call Centre - 520 workstations
Research and Developmet Office - 120 workstations
Markeing Department - 40 workstations
Information technology - 130 workstations
Head Office - 60 workstations

TASK- Write a 800 words (+/- 10%) (Max) report explaining:

a.The detailed design of a simple addressing solution (with diagram(s) and step by step workout of the calculations) that leaves room for growth, is easy to administer and has the minimum wastage of available IP address space.[ 3.5 Marks]

b.Explain what happens to your design if the number of hosts per network jumps to over 1,024 per building.[ 1.5 Marks]

Rationale

This assessment aims to assess the following learning objectives of this subject:

  • be able to analyse IP addressing requirements and design an addressing scheme;

  • be able to analyse the requirements of IP routing and choose appropriate routing methods;

  • be able to demonstrate how internetworking devices obtain their network configuration;

  • be able to explain how data flows through the internet; and

  • be able to ascertain and evaluate selection of applications and protocols for transferring data across the internet.

Question 1. Compare and contrast the OSI reference model with the TCP/IP networking model. Which one do you think is more useful when working with and describing networks and why?
Answer: OSI and TCP/IP are two networking protocol standards to define the network communication and entities  (Chaudry, 2018). The difference between these two network reference stan
dards are defined Point wise as follows
· Open System Interconnection is protocol independent network standard whereas Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is protocol dependent.
· OSI is has totally seven layers whereas TCP/IP protocol suite has only five layers.
· There is guarantee of the delivery of packets to destination system from source system by transport layer of OSI model but, with TCP/IP model it depends upon the type and selection of the protocol such as User Datagram Protocol (UDP) does not guarantees the packets from source to destination and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) at transport layer guarantees the delivery of packets from source to destination system.
· Vertical communication approach is employed by OSI model whereas Horizontal communication approach is employed by TCP/IP model.
· With TCP/IP, there are two types of connection services such connection oriented and connection less services are provided whereas by OSI only the connection oriented service is provided.
· The protocols under the OSI model changes with respect to the change in the technology and also be hidden but in case of the TCP/IP reference model the protocols do not changes by change in the technology and properly specified and defined.
· It is always a problem to fit the protocols on the specified layer of the OSI model but this is not a problem with the TCP/IP model.
· OSI model is conceptual model that provides the standards for communication whereas the TCP/IP is an implementation model of the communication over the Internet.
· OSI model provides the definitions of the service, interface and protocols but the TCP/IP model there is not any definition of the service, interface and protocol.
· OSI model gives the network connection from the bottom layer to upper layer whereas the TCP/IP model gives the network connection from top layer to bottom layer.
· There is complexity with the OSI model standards but TCP/IP model standard is very simple and simplified implementation.
· Reliability is provided by the OSI model whereas by TCP/IP model reliability does not be provided.
· OSI model is general reference model for the standards of the communication system while TCP/IP is real model for the communication system containing various protocols at each of the layer.
· The application, presentation and session layers are separate layers in OSI model but these three layers are combined together in TCP/IP model
Question 2. Complete the following Hands-On Projects from the prescribed textbook (Pyles, Carel & Tittel 2017),
1. Hands-On Project 2-3
Exercise Solution: Steps taken are as follows.
First of all www.gestioip.net/cgi-bin/subnet_calculator.cgi is opened in google chrome web browser. After opening the website PIV4 radio button is selected and the IP address 192.168.0.0 is filled under the IP address field. Thereafter 24 (255.255.255.0 – 254 hosts) is selected from the MB combo box and then result is displayed having the following snapshot.
2. Hands-On Project 2-5
Exercise Solutions: Steps that are taken as follows.
The website www.subnet-calculator.com is opened in google chrome web browser. In subnet calculator window class radio button is already selected and IP address is 192.168.0.1 is already filled in IP address field. After that the max subnet combo box is clicked and value 4 is selected. After that following changes in the various fields of subnet calculator is recorded.
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.192, Subnet Bits – 2, Max Bits – 26, Host Per Subnet – 62, Host Address Range - 192.168.0.1 – 192.168.0.62 and Broadcast Address - 192.168.0.63. The snapshot of subnet calculator is as follows.
Now Further, steps are taken do the rest of tasks,
The radio button of subnet calculator window is selected as class A and the IP address field changes with value 10.0.0.1. Thereafter, the subnet mask 255.255.0.0 is selected by clicking on Subnet Mask combo box subnet calculator. After doing this following values are obtained for various fields of subnet calculator.
Subnet Bits – 8, Maximum Subnets – 256, Mask Bits – 16, Host Per Subnet – 65534, Host Address Range - 10.0.0.1 - 10.0.255.254 and Broadcast Address –...
