Neodymium is a strategic material. Permanent magnets based on neodymium have the highest remnant induction (giving the most powerful magnetic field) and coercive force (the greatest resistance to demagnetization) per unit weight of any known material, making them the most attractive candidates for DC motors and generators like those used in hybrid and electric vehicles and in wind turbines. Currently over 90% of the global production of neodymium is in China, raising concerns about supply-chain concentration. Use Google to explore alternative permanent-magnet materials.
