Atmospheric Circulation Lab Questions
***Please submit only this document at the end of the lab period***
INSTRUCTIONS: Please read the lab reader before beginning this exercise.
The following lab questions will be based upon the material given in the lab reader. The course textbook and lecture notes will serve as useful resources for this exercise.
1. [7.5] What are isobars and how are they used to determine weather patterns?
Ans : Lines of constant or equal pressure are known as isobars on a weather map. They can help us determine how severe the system may be and can be used to locate areas of low or high pressure across a large area. isobar, a line representing a constant barometric pressure on a weather map, is depicted on a specific reference surface. Due to the intimate relationship between pressure and weather, the isobaric structure on a consistent surface is very helpful in weather forecasting.
2. [2.5] What is the average atmospheric pressure at sea-level (in millibars)?
The average pressure at sea level is 1013.25 millibars, which is the metric unit of pressure used by meteorologists.
3. [5] Complete the following statements regarding atmospheric pressure and air circulation in
the northern hemisphere.

Descending air causes deflection

Counter clockwise direction.
Ascending air causes deflection to the east
at the surface in a
Northwards direction.
Descending air produces Polae easterlies
pressure at the surface.
Ascending air produces Coriolis force
pressure at the surface.
4. [20] Figure 1 shows a surface pressure map (in millibars) of the United States. Fill in the
map
by drawing isobars at 4mb intervals starting with 1020mb. Appropriately label each isobar
with its pressure. In addition, please label any high pressure cells with an "H" and any low
pressure cells with an "L" at their centers.
