1.0 Introduction
Language is unique among various communication systems occurring in this natural world. With increasing influence of digitisation and increased usage of internet, a rich compositional and combinatorial structure can be observed to form a meaning bearing compressed linguistic structure. Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) has been assisting people across the globe to breakdown the geographical barriers and communicate their message or their feelings through communication over a distance. One such popular compressed language is hashtags. The language and the symbol became so pervasive in social media platforms that almost every social networking platform provides one or the other functionality for hashtags. People have been making use of these hashtags to convey their messages and feelings over social media platforms. Business organisations have been making use of it to launch digital marketing campaigns, which are likely to turn beneficial for these organisations in the end.
2.0 CMC Texts
1. #WantAnR8
Audi used this hashtag during the year 2017, to promote the launch of their car R8. The entire campaign started with a tweet of a twitter user who used the hashtag to describe why they wanted an Audi R8.

This social media campaign was launched by Domino’s Pizza in the year 2012. It offered discounts to its social media audience by sampling posting a tweet.

This campaign was launched by Coca Cola in the year 2017 and redefined the image for the brand particularly on social media. This campaign helped people personalise their coke and enjoy it with their loved ones.

3.0 Analysis
3.1 Evolution of Hashtags
The first hashtag or the hash symbol was used in the year 1988 for an Internet Relay Chat. This was used to label topics and groups who have common interest over the entire network. This made it easier for the users to get the information they were looking for. As the usage of internet increased, social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter came into existence. The hashtag feature is most commonly used on Twitter (Daher, Zantout & Elkabani, 2017). Twitter did not support the hashtag feature initially. The users were quite frustrated as they could see a lot of irrelevant content.
This became a source of inspiration for Chris Messina, who then took inspiration from the IRC and came up with the first Twitter hashtag in August 2007. Though this effort was not welcomed by Twitter initially, Twitter later started using hashtags to group relevant content. In the year 2009, Twitter finally came up with a search tool that enabled the users to find who else was using the particular hashtag. Twitter then came up with “Trending Topics”, which displays the most popular and widely used hashtags.
