With internet growing by leaps and bounds and replicating each of the activities of the real world
such as shopping, making a banking transaction, meeting someone new etc. it is bound to
replicate the real world threats as well. These threats on the online world are very much real and
have the potential to cause damage on a far wider scale than that of their real world counterparts.
These threats that have emerged online and has gained popularity in the 21st century is popularly
known as Cyber Attacks. On a global scale, if multiple countries are involved in this, it would be
known as Cyber Warfare. A person carrying out such activity is termed as Cyber terrorists. Such
acts of terrorism which are carried on the internet also carry serious punishment as that of their
real world counterparts.
There are two types of people or groups who carry out such cyber-attacks. One who actually
want to cause damage, steal money or confidential information and other who does such attacks
for the purpose to highlight their cause. While it‟s debatable as to whether the later should fall
into the same category of cyber terrorist as the former but nevertheless, they‟re committing a
crime something which is a serious and a punishable offence. Some of the common names that
are responsible for most of such crimes are Eurasian Youth Movement, Pakistan Cyber Army,
Lulzsec and Anonymous group. Throughout the paper, the latter topic would be discussed and in
particular would focus on two groups called Anonymous and Lulzsec.
Anonymous is a hacktivist group that emerged from the popular online imageboard 4Chan
(Landers). The members of the group wear the famous Guy Fawkes Masks to distinguish
themselves in the public. Many websites including the one where the group primarily associated
that is 4Chan are associated with Anonymous group. Some of the most famous attacks online on
popular organizations are as follows:
a. On January 2012, when Megaupload a popular file-hosting and file-sharing website was
shut down by the FBI and the United States Department of Justice, Anonymous Group
targeted their websites and shut it down and also simultaneously shut down the Motion
Picture Association of America, Broadcast Music Inc., and Recording Industry
Association of America (Kelion).
