MYP History T5 – Health & Medicine Changes in medicine and medical practice in the 20th century SOI: Conflict, war and crisis often lead to improvements in medicine and medical practice which ultimately benefit all societies. Aim Write an article on the changes (advances/improvements) to medical knowledge and practice as a result of the two World Wars in the 20th century. Who are you? You are a medical student at university (also interested in history), writing an article for your college magazine. Who is your audience? As a medical student, you are writing for a college magazine which will be read by your fellow medical students as well as your professors interested in the advancement of medicine through time. You need to keep your language and tone formal – but use language and expressions that your audience will find engaging from a historical perspective. What should you include? · A title in the form of a research question (linked to the SOI) and your name underneath the title; · 2 related sub-questions (related to the 1st and 2nd World War); · Two appropriate primary visual sources with captions– (one in each of the sub-sections). · A short introduction / main body (in appropriate paragraphs) and a conclusion – related to the SOI. Your conclusion should aim to summarize your findings and answer your RQ in a balanced and reflective way. · Your written paragraphs need specific details/examples with important names/dates of medical improvements as a result of the two World Wars – but don’t forget to include the negative impact of conflict either. Do not merely describe … offer your critical commentary/opinion. You may refer to one or two historian’s views as well. · Bibliography. How long should your article be? Max. 800 words long (not counting headings, subheadings and captions). What criteria will you be assessed on?
