Sophomore English Cause & Effect - Research Paper Assignment Sheet Assignment: For this paper, you will research a particular event, invention, or law (etc.) in history, then write a research paper explaining how your topic has had an effect on history. Your controls will explore three ways in which your topic has had a lasting effect on history. Note: You may not select a person for your topic. Example: The September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks affected immigration policies, airport security, and government oversight. IMPORTANT: Your controls should emphasize the effect, not your topic. Brainstorming a Topic: Consider... · What is your favorite period in history? Be as specific as possible regarding time and place. · What important events and/or discoveries occurred at this time? · Think about technology, political views, economy, art, religion, literature, music, culture, etc. · What changed as a result of this discovery or event? Guidelines: Content · Paper must be written in formal, academic writing style. · Paper must be submitted to PowerSchool AND turnitin.com. · If plagiarism of any kind occurs, the paper will receive a failing grade. · Minimum of 4 full pages; maximum of 6 full pages (not including the Works Cited page) Sources · Every source listed in the Works Cited must be cited at least once in the paper. · Paper must use a variety of sources (5 source minimum) · At least 1 book source (hard copy or electronic) *Online encyclopedias will not count as your book source · At least 1 article from a database (databases must be through LMC) · At least 1 website (must be credible) · Can self-select remaining (2+) sources (encyclopedia, book, website, database, newspaper/magazine/journal article, video, interview, etc.) Process Pieces: Note: All process assignments are due to PowerSchool, and some may also be collected in hard copy. Each control should be about 1-1.5 pages to make each control point balanced. 2. Paper will be more than 5 paragraphs! Each control must have 2 paragraphs. Each paragraph will focus on a more specific sub-topic of the control. Example: Control 1: Immigration policies · Paragraph 1 - The development of the Department of Homeland Security · Paragraph 2 - Development of privatized immigration enforcement companies 0. You will also have an introduction and conclusion paragraph (8 paragraphs total) 1. At least 2 citations per paragraph (Remember that quoted, paraphrased, and summarized source information must be cited). You will likely have more than 2 citations per paragraph. 2. Use no more than 3 direct quotes (“quotes in quotation marks”) per control. You will have other sentences cited in your paper for paraphrasing and summarizing of ideas. 3. At least 1 direct quote per control. 4. At least 2 paraphrased/summarized ideas (cited) per control. 5. Keep relating each paragraph back to your thesis statement. You can do this with your concluding sentence of each paragraph.
