- APA formatting that includes the cover page, margins, font, page numbers, use of headings, in-text citations and references. (10 points)
Include a reference page for any sources that are cited in these first three pages. The following is the requirements for the final Policy Paper, these should be implemented in this draft, as well.
Policy Paper:
Your paper must be an analysis of a human service policy or program, such as those covered in the course. The paper should demonstrate outside research and sources. Discussion should include the relevance of the topic in respect to social welfare policy. Describe the impact, values, and beliefs, and extent of the effect on society. How does this issue relate to human services, and your ideas and suggestions for possible future action.
To help structure your paper, the following suggestions can be used as a guide:
Introduction
- Briefly introduce your topic and grab the reader's attention.
Overview of the Problem
- Identify the problem and the way it is defined.
- Identify the causes to which the problem is attributed.
- What are the values and beliefs that make the events of concern defined as a social problem?
- Why is or is not this concern being raised as a problem at this time in history?
- Is this a "new" problem?
Human Service Policy or Program
- What ideologies, theories, or paradigms of the human service system are relevant? Why?
- Who is defining this issue as a social problem and how is that different from the past? What conditions are different? How is society different?
- Who has power in regard to this issue?
- Is there a role for human service professionals? If so, what is the role of the human service professional?
- Is the problem adequately addressed by present human service policies and programs? Is there more or less which should be done?
- What are your suggested changes or approaches to the problem?
Political Viewpoints
- What is the liberal perspective of this issue and how to resolve it?
- What is the conservative perspective of this issue and how to resolve it?
Discussion
- What are the strengths of this policy?
- What are the weaknesses and/or limitations of this policy?
- What is the future of this policy?
- What have you learned that will assist you in your future as a human service professional?
Paper Requirements:
- The final paper should be 8-10 pages excluding the cover page and references.
- This paper should be typed, double-spaced and be written in APA format.
- Use headings to organize your paper. For example, you might want to use headings such as Overview of the Problem, Human Service Policy, Political Viewpoints and Discussion.
- A minimum of 5 professional resources must be used. A professional resource would be an article from a peer reviewed or scholarly journal, local, state or federal government website, or documents generated by governmental groups.
