My topic is on wave-powered energy and how it affects marine life, specifically marine birds.Term Papers Many of your science classes at Millersville University will require you to complete a term paper for a research experiment or for a review of literature on a specific subject matter. If the term paper is based on an experiment, it should involve the scientific method. The scientific method usually includes (1) an Introduction section, (2) a Materials and Methods section, (3) a Results section, (4) a Discussion, (5) a Literature Cited, (6) Tables, and (7) Figures. In this paper, you will be constructing a literature review to answer a set of questions relevant to ornithology and your career interests, NOT an experiment with methods and results. The goal of a term paper is to present the facts. The goal of science is truth, thus no persuasion is necessary in this type of document. Overall writing formats or guidelines for these lab reports should include the following: 1. Term papers should be typed and double-spaced using a computer. Reports should be in 12 point size, Times New Roman style, have 1 inch margins, and organized neatly for the reader to understand your experiment or literature review completely. 2. Correct spelling and grammar should be used, and the report should be written in complete sentences (with subject and verb). 3. Past tense should be used when writing. You completed your experiments in the past or you are reviewing literature that has already been completed and published. 5. Each section should be labeled with the appropriate heading (e.g., Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Literature Cited). 6. Do not plagiarize! Meaning ‘to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (another's production) without crediting the source intransitive verb : to commit literary theft : present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.’ All your facts should be cited by the correct reference unless the facts are coming from your own research. 7. To help with clarity: proof-read, then have somebody else proof-read, and then proof-read again. The Following example is a term paper that I completed for my Ecosystem Management Class. This paper was submitted for publication in the journal Current Zoology. Therefore, this paper was written to become a peer-reviewed publication. All term papers should be completed with the goal that they are of the quality to be submitted for publication. You will be completing your manuscript following the style guidelines for the Journal of Wildlife Management. The comments throughout this example outline the reasoning for the writing style and provide further details on how to follow a proper scientific writing style. Note the importance of the Abstract section in the following example.
