Elements of a good first essay for COR109 Introduction MUST contain: 1- Topic sentence (a brief introductory statement that introduces the topic. Avoid vague statements e.g. throughout history etc.) 2- Thesis statement (1-2 sentences). The thesis statement should have a stance (what are you arguing) and a scope (what are your premises/arguments- why/how?). 3- Previewing statements (to clarify each of the main premises that will be argued in the body paragraphs. For this essay, 3 should suffice. One for each paragraph. You may find it easier to write these at the end of the essay. 4- Concluding sentence (final sentence of introduction that should link back to the thesis statement). ** Do not in-text reference in the introduction. Introductions should make up approximately 10% of the word count. Body paragraphs MUST contain: 1- Topic sentence (what is the paragraph about?). 2- Several developing sentences (definitions, descriptions, comparisons, details, examples etc.). 3- Transitional sentences* (link ideas/arguments together to show relationships). * Use words such as therefore, however, as a result etc. 4- Concluding sentence (summarising statement for the body paragraph that links back to the thesis statement). ** Body paragraphs contain all of the evidence to support the argument being made. Therefore, they require multiple references in each paragraph. It is suggested that each paragraph should contain at least 2-3 different sources in order to demonstrate adequate research and an understanding of the material. Conclusion MUST contain: 1- Topic sentence (reiterate thesis statement) 2- Summarising statements for each body paragraph 3- Concluding sentence (concludes main argument and links to the thesis statement) **Do not use in-text references in the conclusion. No new material should be introduced in the conclusion. Conclusion should make up approximately 10% of the word count.
