Introduction
Complementary medicines can be defined as the non-prescript medicines, which can be easily available at pharmacies, health food shops and supermarkets. Most of these medicines are purchased by the customers from the shelf without being mandatory to have written permission of the doctors. There are large variety of complementary medicines such as traditional herbal medicine, nutritional supplement, vitamins and minerals, homeopathic preparations, allopathic medicines, aromatherapeutic medicines and Ayurvedic medicines (Smith et al.). Complementary medicines get very high competition by conventional medicines. Conventional medicines can be defined as the medicines, which are referred by the heath care practitioners to treat the symptoms or disease. These medicines can be either drugs, radiation or surgery (Elder et al.). It has been seen that conventional medicines may have many side effects in comparison to the complementary medicines. The rate of use of conventional medicine is higher; despite complementary medicines have many health benefits. Nowadays, there is high competition among complementary medicines. Allopathy has taken over the homeopathy market. The high competition can also the reason people select conventional medicine as they are standardized for the treatment.
Background
Until 19th century, the demand of the complementary medicine around the globe is very high. People were mainly dependent on the complementary medicines such as Ayurvedic medicine or homeopathic medicine for the treatment of the disease. After 19th century, with the development of the scientific medicines, the demand of the conventional medicines started. Slowly over the period, people around the globe become completely dependent on the conventional medicines for treatment (Rowan and Dixon). For example, earlier malaria was treated with the bark of cinchona tree. Now, for the treatment of malaria, people commonly use is chloroquine, which is synthetically prepared in the laboratory.
On the contrary, some of the complementary medical treatment such as Ayurvedic are still in demand since Ancient history. Apart from this, in 18th century, homeopathy was developed by the German doctor who believes that “like cures like”. He stated that minute concentrations of a particular toxic could cure the symptoms, which it could cause in larger doses. It must be noted that homeopathy is a complementary medicinal practice, which include use of the extremely dilute amount of some of the natural substances to treat many kinds of diseases (da Silva Andrade et al.).
