ENGG851 - Assignment One IMPORTANT: To pass this subject you must get at least 35% in four out of the five assessment tasks and participate in all five assessed activities. Failure to do so will result in a Technical Fail. The ‘Due Date’ is the due date. While you are given a penalty free period, do not consider the end of the penalty free period as your ‘real’ due date. For students that do, it is common that when they go to submit they encounter problems and ask for an extension. You will not get one – do not ask or email as your requests will be ignored. If your work exceeds the penalty free date you will receive a penalty as outlined in the subject outline! Therefore, aim to complete for the real due date and if you run into problems you will actually have the penalty free period to save you. DO NOT email your submission to the teaching staff. Only work submitted via Turnitin will be accepted for marking. Emails will be deleted without response. After the penalty free period expires, if you have already submitted a document through Turnitin, you will NOT be able to resubmit another updated document. What you need to do: 1) Update your Literature Planner to show that you have reviewed AT LEAST 15 articles. AT LEAST 8 entries must be JOURNAL articles. - Please note that Turnitin will probably capture your work from the Progress Check submission as a similarity. This is ok! This will help the marker see what changes have occurred from the last submission - All references used must be accessible (e.g. via the UOW library online search facility, free PDF available through a Google Scholar search) so that the marker can check your references 2) Update and finalise your Mind Map. The structure, look and feel should follow the guidelines provided in lecture 2. - Identify key pockets of research and important findings within those pockets. Ensure you draw connections between these findings to highlight how they complement or contradict each other. Also highlight any existing gaps in our knowledge or understanding (e.g., long-term negative impacts?). Links to the research articles must be shown and the articles must be listed in the Literature Planner 3) Write the Introduction Chapter for a thesis based on your topic based on the structure of a Mind Map as provided in lecture 2. - Use the resource “Getting Started with Assessment One” on Moodle to help you understand and guide the process - This should be about 700 words (maximum 1000) excluding reference list (write under the heading what the word count is) - You must use at least 10 references (minimum 5 journal) - Using the Mind Map structure shown in lecture the introduction should: Define the topic and showing its importance; identify different pockets and sub-pockets of research (themes); identify general conclusions based on the synthesis of literature; identify key research findings derived from PRIMARY research studies; specify the gaps in the research to position your work. That is, why it is important to read your thesis (what will you be doing); and finally, outline your final case as to why your work is important and outline the overarching question as to the point of everything you are doing - You need to define your research question very clearly - Ensure that the research question can be answered via undertaking a primary research design (even though you will not be carrying out any experiment in this subject). - All references used must be listed in the Literature Planner - The reference list must also be at the end of the introduction chapter - Formatting: SECTE students must use IEEE formatting for citations. Other students can use IEEE or Harvard (preferred) - Text must be in your own words. PAY PARTICULAR attention to lecture 2 for how plagiarism is detected. Your mark will be zero or close to zero if work is not in your own words. REMEMBER the purpose of this subject is to demonstrate your higher order skills – analysis, synthesis and evaluation!!!!! Submission: 1) The three activities need to be combined into one document and placed in the following order: - The Introduction Chapter - The reference list - The Mind Map (ensure that this can be easily read) - The Literature Planner If your Mind Map is in landscape format, within word you can use Page Layout -> Section Break to create a formatting break and change one page of your word document into the landscape format. Please note that Microsoft Office skills are prerequisite knowledge and all the answers to questions in using Office can be found from Google. IMPORTANT – You can submit your work to Turnitin as many times as you like up until the penalty free period expires. When resubmitting ensure the file name remains the same. Only the last version will be used to confirm the originality. The first time you submit your work to Turnitin it will take only a few minutes to generate the report. All further submissions will take at least 24hours to produce the report. Therefore you need to plan your work very carefully. Waiting for a Turnitin report is no excuse for late submission! Words of Advice: 1. Use the marking rubric and subject outline to guide you through what needs to be done and submitted. Understand all the penalties that apply 2. Use the structure of the introduction example and plagiarism examples presented to you in lecture 2 to guide you 3. Get a friend to proof read your chapter. Your ability to write is a major contribution to the assessment 4. Use EndNote to help with referencing (still check the references and make corrections if required) 5. Do not leave this to the last minute. A lot of work is required to complete the assessment 6. Turnitin will find all sorts of plagiarism. Any attempts to beat the Turnitin system will face major penalties. See the marking rubric for more details.
