African American Slavery
Slavery means the injustice which has been carried out since 1600s against humans. African American slavery is all about black people ruled by the whites. The reason behind slavery is division of levels among the society and culture and it acts as main cause behind racism. Severe damage was done to race relations because of slavery in America due to formation of a rift among the whites and blacks. Slavery has caused irreparable damage in African American history which is visible even today in terms of racial tensions amongst citizens after the slavery abolishment in 1800s. This slavery made blacks and whites drift apart and gave birth to white supremacy that made white people think that they are superior inherently due to their descendant and skin color. Abolishment of slavery happened about 150 years ago but there is still presence of scars. This is because; the ones who got enslaved still did not forget their ancestor’s struggle and it have impression on their hearts making them more defensive than normal. Even in 21st century today, many people of color are racism victim. For example, black people still face more severe punishment in comparison to white people. Even today, they are criticized and made embarrassed over color of skin and thus there is high need to overcome the slavery along with its all manifestations for security and condition of all citizens irrespective of religion, race, economic and social position. Slavery never served for good to any human, neither minority ones nor majority ones rather it divided humans further by putting tags on each other.
Around 500 years ago, billions of enslaved Africans were transported by ships across the Atlantic oceans to Americas. This movement of massive population served in creation of the African Diaspora in new worlds where in many failed to survive ocean journey itself. Enslaved Africans there represented several varying peoples belonging to different religions, cultures and the languages. Most of these Africans originated from interior or coasts of West Africa that is between Senegal and Angola of present day. Other enslaved ones came from Tanzania and Madagascar originally in East Africa. Sustaining slavery was really difficult but a strong community as well as family life helped African Americans. Often, people chose their partners, raised children together while living under same roof and tried to protect each other as much as possible. However, the black family life was threatened by the brutal treatments at slaveholder’s hands. Sexual exploitation was experienced by enslaved women at hands of overseers and the slaveholders. There was a constant fear among bond people regarding being sold away from the ones they love with nil chances of reunion. It is estimated by historians that most of the bond peoples in their lives were sold at least once. It was severely traumatic for them to be forcibly separated from the loved ones and thus sometimes people fled on hearing of impending sale.
Slavery existed throughout the 13 colonies originally covering nearly all northern states but slavery was abolished in 1804 inspired by American independence. Some of the southern slaveholders also permitted or freed their slaves as matter of conscience to purchase their freedom. Many southern states until early 1800s allowed these manumissions to happen legally. The federal government however outlawed in 1808 the overseas slave trade, even after that the southern enslaved African American population and continued to grow the same. The slave trade was fueled up by the demands of European consumes for new world goods and crops. The triangular route was followed between the Caribbean and North America, Africa and Europe wherein the Africans were delivered by slave traders from Portugal, Holland, England and France in exchange for tobacco, sugar and colonial rum etc. Further to meet the demand growth of cotton and sugar, slaveholders developed a slave trade which was active a domestic so as to move surplus slaves to Deep South leading to making Louisiana, New Orleans the largest slave mart followed by many more. 60% of enslaved population from upper south was sold south between 1820 and 1860 years. Coffles which are large groups of men, women and children were marched more than 25-30 miles each day wherein the women were tied together with rope and the men were tied with chains in neck and in pairs, they were handcuffed. And as soon as they reached near the market, traders used to remove all the restraints.
Around 4 million enslaved African Americans by year 1860 lives throughout the south wherein most of enslaved were agricultural laborers who were toiled from sunrise to sunset at their jobs either in fields, refining sugar etc. Specialized jobs were held by some bonds such as factory workers, skilled labors and artisans and small number of them worked as butlers, cooks or maids. Enslaved African Americans during 17th and 18th centuries mostly raised tobacco in upper south whereas they grew rice and harvested indigo for dye with the help of agricultural expertise in Georgia and coastal South Carolina. Rice, cotton and sugar became leading cash crops of south by 1800s. Due to this industrial revolution in Great Britain, the demand for cotton increased 4 folds and became leading export of America.
