The Concept of Subtle Body
The subtle body is one of the three bodies where kosha or t
he sheaths reside. Accordingly, the yoga philosophy presence that the human body is made up of predicting the bodies. The physical body, the subtle body, and the casual body. Within these three bodies, there are five sheaths. Annamayya kosha, pranamaya kosha, manomaya kosha, vijnanamaya kosha and anandmaya kosha. The Annamayya kosha represents the food sheath, pranama kosha the vital sheath, manomaya kosha the mental sheath, vijnanamaya kosha the intellectual sheath, and anandamaya kosha that represents the bliss sheath. Accordingly, the kosha system of the yoga philosophy ascertains that the nature of a human being is encompassed by the physical and the psychological aspects that perform holistically to sustain the entire system of the body.
These aspects are influenced by the three different bodies of the individual. The physical body is the most obvious one that represents our skin, bones, and muscles the elements of which human beings are made up. This is influenced by the five elements of earth, water, fire, air, and ether (Samuel, 2019). These aspects can be balanced by yoga and asana practice. The subtitle body is the feeling of pleasure or pain that relates to our senses. This relates to the five organs of action, five organs of knowledge, five pranas, and the four elements of antakharana (the inner instrument). While the casual body is the blueprint of the physical and the subtle body (Czyżykowski, 2018).
This particular essay will discuss the subtitle body in the context of Hindu and tantric Buddhism. The discussion shall effectively focus on the comparison between the Hindu and Buddhist perspectives of the subtle body and will eventually outline the history of the philosophy of the subtle body up to the modern-day. The discussion shall also contemplate the manner in which it has been made to the western world and speak about the aspects that relate to the modern-day alternative therapies.
The Subtle Body in Hinduism & Tantric Buddhism
The concept of the subtle body system has evolved and has significantly changed throughout India and Tibet. These have been a major aspect of controversy with the effective movement of ideas to the Western world that has subsequently developed the modern therapies with similar ideas. In the Bhagavad Gita, the subtitle body is defined as a combination of mind, intellect, and ego (Gray, 2021). This subtle body controls the physical body and the yogi experiences pleasure and pain. According to the yogic philosophy, the subtle body is considered to be the energetic layer that constitutes a human being beyond its physical body.
The subtle body constitutes the sheath of vital life, psychology, and the sheath of wisdom, and intellect. Buddhist philosophy and Hindu philosophy propose that the subtitle body from the casual body manifests by controlling only aspects of the physical body (Heislup, 2020). In Sanskrit, the subtle body is known as the sukshm sharira or the linga sharira. It is imperative to note that the concept of the subtle body is the central aspect of yogic, tantric, and Taoist traditions which are the significant aspects of Hinduism and Buddhism. Although it is not tangible the subtle body awareness is developed from the third eye.
Yoga manipulates the energy of the subtle bodies as a means of connecting with the higher self through the casual body. Western literature has contemplated it as the quasi-material aspect of the human body that is neither solely physical nor it is solely spiritual. According to various occult and mystical teachings subtle body is something that does exist but cannot be seen (Pati & Zubko, 2019). The western thought of mind-body dualism has dominated the idea of subtitle thought in contrast to the Indo Tibetan philosophy of subtitle body. The subtitle body surrounds the physical body as an order of energy that travels through the subtle energy channels nadis. It is the subtle medium that merges with the physical medium and reflects on the physical existence of the human being.
Subtle Body in Hinduism
Vedant and the Vedic science contemplate that the soul is formed within the body. According to the Vedic Sciences, the subtle body is the psychological or the functional aspect of the human being. For higher animals like human being’s subtitle body is considered to be the psyche or the mental body of the soul. The lower animals on the other hand can have a soft body that can be witnessed through their intelligence and activities. The subtle body in every living being is related to survival and the feelings of pressure and pain. According to the Hindu philosophy the subtitle body carries the basic instincts for the protection and survival of the living organisms (Venkatraman et al., 2019).
