CRITICAL REVIEW OF THE NEWS ARTICLE “ABORIGINAL DEATHS IN CUSTODY: BLACK LIVES MATTER PROTESTS REFERRED TO OUR COUNT OF 432 DEATHS. IT'S NOW 437”
After thorough reading of the news article “Aboriginal Deaths in Custody: Black Lives Matter Protests Referred to our Count of 432 Deaths. It's Now 437” I can say that
this particular article is about the global ongoing protest “Black Lives Matter” and the aboriginal deaths that have been continuing in Australia to the coloured people in custody. The unit we are dealing with here is based on indigenous culture and tradition and indigenous people have always been referred to as Blacks in the land of Australia since time immemorial. Also, the article deals with the deaths of coloured people all over Australia and hence the article I chose to review is related to the unit content.
So, in 1983 a 16 year old kid died in a police cell. After his death, many indigenous activists started a campaign which led to the formation of the Royal Commission which basically enquired about the deaths of native or aboriginal people who died while under police custody in Australia.
The media channel named “The Guardian” had been doing a project for two years now, tracking the aboriginals deaths while under police custody. And what they found is that the number has recently risen from 432 to 437. According to the data provided by the Guardian, indigenous people are way more injured in custody related to non-indigenous people. The issue portrayed here is positive and for the good of indigenous people. Also, the outcome of the issue portrayed here must be positive since it speaks against the atrocities committed to the natives. By chance there is a negative outcome, it also has to be borne by the native people since it will only result in more oppression of the culture and it’s natives. The news articles basically provide us with one perspective only, which is, there has been no proper care taken when it comes to the lives of Black people. Even when they are strictly under the eyes of the law. As evidence to this we can take the case of a native woman named Tanya Day whose death could have been prevented if she was not taken into custody. Although the channel stated that the most common reason for people dying while in custody is due to medical issues. But the fact can not also be ignored that the deaths of coloured people have been mysterious and now evidently more than other racial groups.
CRITICAL REVIEW OF THE NEWS ARTICLE “BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT PROMPTS CALLS FOR GREATER FOCUS ON INDIGENOUS HISTORY IN AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS”
The news article “Black Lives Matter Movement Prompts Calls For Greater Focus On Indigenous History In Australian Schools” deals with the way that the Australian kids come to know or learn about the Native history or the Indigenous history of Australia and how it can be worked on to make improvements. It was a protest that actually started against police brutality against the coloured people as a global “Black Lives Matter” movement. The unit we are dealing with here is also related to the indigenous culture and their traditions and hence the...
