  1. Most objects can be described with 3 properly selected views. Sometimes fewer (for very simple parts) or more views are necessary.
The most common views in the US are top, front, and right side.
The “front” is typically identified as being the most complex face. However, if there is a “right-side up” or standard orientation needed when the part is used, that alignment supersedes the complexity based guidance. An isometric view is also typically included in the upper right.

  2. Sometimes specialized auxiliary or section views (i.e. cut-away) are necessary to completely describe an object.

  3. The various views are aligned with each other in the drawing so the reader can put see the relationships among the 2D representations of the features.

  4. Each view (other than the isometric) is done with ‘wireframe’ visualization settings on. So the internal lines can be observed.

  1. Dimensions

    1. Size dimensions
describe how big a feature is.

    2. Location dimensions
describe where a feature is located.

    3. For flat pieces, give the thickness dimension in the edge view, and all other dimensions in the outline view.

    4. Dimension features in the view where they can be seen in true size and shape.

    5. Use diameter dimensions for circles.

    6. Use radial dimensions for arcs.

    7. Omit unnecessary dimensions. Should have everything you need, but nothing extra (i.e.
no redundancies in information). SolidWorks makes this easy by displaying a warning when you try to over specify (i.e. the driving/driven warning or error)

    8. Place dimensions away from the profile lines.

    9. Allow space between individual dimensions.

    10. The size and style of leader line, text, and arrows should be consistent throughout the drawing and legible throughout.
