Lateral earth movement occurs when parts of the earth are pushing up against a structure. In other words, we build a wall to hold back a hillside in order to prevent failure of that hill, erosion, etc. and when we do this the earth behind that wall pushes against the wall and creates a lateral earth movement. There are a couple different ways we can fight lateral earth movement and that is by building one of these different types of retaining walls; gravity wall, cantilever wall, piling wall or anchored wall. Retaining walls are good in many situations and help us provide a good rigid structure to hold back any soil which we don't want to erode or move.
