MITS4003 Database Systems Assignment 1 Paper presentation and participation March 2020 NOTE: This Document is used in conjunction with Assessment 1 [Paper presentation & participation] and Assessment 2 [Research Report] in the Teaching and Assessment Plan document [MITS4003_Teaching and Assessment Plan.pdf] Presentation and Participation – 10% (Due Week 5) Objectives(s) This assessment item relates to the unit learning outcomes as in the unit descriptor. This assessment is designed to improve student presentation skills, enhance students experience in researching a topic relevant to the Unit of Study subject matter. INSTRUCTIONS For this assignment you will be required to do a 5-10 minute presentation (if individual) or 15-20 minutes (if group) on a recent academic paper on a topic related to Database Systems, Data Mining or Data Analysis. Some possible topic areas include but not limited to: • Data integration • Scientific Data Management • Databases and the Web • Non-Relation Databases • Security of Database systems • Database Role in Big Data • Distributed Database Systems The paper you select must be directly relevant to the above topics or another topic that is related to Database Systems. The paper can be from any academic conference or other relevant Journal or online sources such as Google Scholar, Academic department repositories. All students must select a different paper and the paper must be approved by your lecturer or tutor before proceeding. In case two students are wanting to present the same paper, the first who emails the lecturer or tutor with their choice will be allocated that paper. Assignment 1 weightage is 10% of the Units mark will be awarded for your presentation and your participation in other student presentations. You have to prepare a PowerPoint slide and present it in your allocated time slots. If you do not present on your schedule time or participate in at least 70% of other student’s presentations, you will forfeit a significant proportion of the marks in this assignment. Note: if there are large number of students in a class you can give presentation in a group. Group can have maximum 4 members. If the presentation is in the group you need to add one extra slide at the end, showing the contribution of each member in the assignment. For group assignment each member needs to present their part. Submission Guidelines • Submissions must be made by the due date and time (which will be in the session detailed above). Submissions made after the due date and time will be penalized at the rate of 10% per day (including weekend days). • Submit your recorded video presentation Assignment 1 link provided on Moodle. • Your video must be in one of the popular video formats (e.g .mp4). • Your video presentation should clearly state student(s) name on the first slide, show all presentation slides and must have a clear audio. Security of the database systems is a crucial operation which a firm should enhance in order to maintain the activities.
I
t is important to understand the database security, principles of the security theory and the practice which relates to the database security.
All the systems have assets which needs security to protect them.
The database is the most important part of any organization where all the data is stored. Without data it is not possible for the firm to survive.
To manage the security firstly understand the data, know about the threats which are putting assets at risk and lastly its impact on the data.
This presentation is regarding the security of the database systems. It is important to secure the database where whole data is stored about the firm. We should try to understand the security of database, principles of the security theory and the practice which helps to relate with the database security. In order to protect the data we should try to know everything about the data, threats for it and the impacts.

Threats to the database
Unauthorized modifications (Changing data values for sabotage, crime or the ignorance which are inadequate security mechanisms.)
Unauthorized closure (When the data should not be disclosed but it is opened)
Loss of availability (Denial of service)
The threats for the database can be of three types.
The unauthorized modifications which can be defined as the changing of data for the reason of sabotage, crime or ignorance which is due to the inadequate security mechanisms
Unauthorized disclosure is the condition when information data should be kept safe but it is disclosed.
The loss of availability can be defined as the denial of service. When the data is not present it can incur the loss.
