MIS300_Assessment_2_Brief_Report_Module Due 5.1 Page 1 of 8 Task Summary For this assignment, students need to individually write a 1500-word business report in response to the provided case study. There are two components: 1. Conceptual questions about the tasks business analysts undertake to support the systems analysis and design process 2. Practical questions in response to the provided case study: MIS300 Assessment Case Study. Please refer to the Task Instructions for details on how to complete this task. Context Process and data modelling form a key part of systems analysis and design. It naturally follows business requirements elicitation and analysis, and is part of the next phase of systems design. It ensures that a model is created of how the system will convert data into valuable information for the organisation. Context diagrams will help define the boundaries of the system being designed, data flow diagrams will show the flow of data through the system and entity relationship diagrams define the relationships between the different entities which are in scope for the system being built. This is a continuation of the analysis and design process initiated in Assessment 1 with requirements analysis and will use the same case study. ASSESSMENT 2 BRIEF Subject Code and Title MIS300 – Systems Analysis & Design Assessment Process & Data Modelling Individual/Group Individual Length 1500 words (± 10%) Learning Outcomes The Subject Learning Outcomes demonstrated by successful completion of the task below include: a) Analyse and explain how systems analysis techniques can enhance the ability of the organisation to address their information systems’ needs. b) Propose systems design to promote the successful achievement of organisational needs. Submission Due by 11:55 pm AEST last Sunday of Module 5.1. Weighting 40% Total Marks 100 MIS300_Assessment_2_Brief_Report_Module Due 5.1 Page 2 of 8 Task Instructions To complete this task, you must: 1. Carefully review the attached MIS300_ Assessment _Case Study. 2. Review your subject notes, essential readings and learning activities to ensure that you are well prepared for the assignment. 3. Create a report plan and identify all the key components required in your report. 4. Follow the outlined report structure Note: The report is brief and therefore will not require an executive summary or abstract. Title page: should include subject ID, subject name, assignment title, student’s name, student number and lecturer’s name. Table of contents: include all key components of this assessment. Introduction (75–100 words): This serves as your statement of purpose for the report. You will tell the reader what you are going to cover in your report. You will need to inform the reader about: • your area of research and its context • the key concepts you will be addressing • what the reader can expect to find in the body of the report. Body of the report (800–850 words): Conceptual questions: • What is a context diagram and why is it required? • What is a data flow diagram? • What is an entity relationship diagram and what purpose does it serve? • What are the differences between a data flow diagram and an entity relationship diagram? Practical tasks: • Build a context diagram for the system using Lucidchart or any other diagramming app, such as app.diagrams.net. • Create a level 0 data flow diagram (DFD) which includes the high-level processes of the system and their relationships. • Decompose 2 number of processes from the level 0 DFD into more detailed level 1 DFD processes. • Identify the entities and their relationships in the system and document these relationships in an entity relationship diagram for the system. • Convert the entity relationship diagram into a relational database design, including database tables and their relationships to the third normal form. MIS300_Assessment_2_Brief_Report_Module Due 5.1 Page 3 of 8 Layout: • The report should use Arial or Calibri 11-point font and should have 1.5 line spacing for ease of reading. A page number must be inserted on the bottom of each page. • With the required diagrams, due attention should be given to pagination to avoid loss of meaning and continuity by unnecessarily splitting information over two pages. Diagrams must carry the appropriate captioning. Conclusion (75–100 words): summarise any findings or recommendations that the report puts forward regarding the concepts covered in the report. Referencing It is essential that you use appropriate APA 6 style for citing and referencing research sources. Please see more information on referencing here: http://library.laureate.net.au/research_skills/referencing. Submission Instructions Please submit ONE Word document (.doc or .docx) via the Assessment 1 section located in the main navigation menu of the subject’s Blackboard site.
