J. Gresham Machen, an apologist and professor of New Testament literature and exegesis in Princeton Theological Seminary (1906-1929)1 founded Westminster Theological Seminary in 1929 after Princeton succumbed to Modernism. Machen hired Van Til as professor of apologetics.2 In his apologetic system Van Til drew the polemical line between his system and that of the Old Princeton School, as represented by Charles Hodge and Benjamin Warfield, whom he labeled “less consistent Calvinists,”3 while maintaining a non-committal stance toward Machen, except for a few incidents of quasi-endorsement of the latter’s apologetic system.4
