Microsoft Word - MGMT11109_Ass 3_Reef Magic Cruises case.docx MGMT11109 Assignment 3 Mini Case: Reef Magic Cruises The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (www.ipcc.ch) released its Fifth Assessment Report forecasting global warming of 1.5oC with a consequential increase in the intensity of tropical cyclones, rainfall events, and increased coral bleaching https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/. Related scientific commentary by Gattuso and colleagues (2014), specific to coral reefs, evaluated that the combined effects of ocean warming and acidification will becoming increasingly detrimental to industries such as tourism. https://www.ipcc.ch/site/assets/uploads/2018/02/WGIIAR5-CCboxes_FINAL.pdf In 2015-2016, the Great Barrier Reef was estimated to have contributed $6.4 billion from 2.3m tourist visitations (Deloitte Access Economics 2017: cited in Prideaux et al, 2018). Creating over 64,000 jobs (directly and indirectly) in the Cairns, Port Douglas and Whitsunday regions, the ability of reef tourism businesses to adapt to the forecast impacts is critical to their sustainability. Not unexpectedly, media reports on weather events, and coral bleaching in particular, can have a marked impact on the travel intentions of potential domestic and international visitors (Biggs, 2011) (Refer Table 6 and 7 in Prideaux et al, 2018). As a management consultant, you have been asked by the Board of Directors of Experience Co Limited (ASX: EXP) to apprise them of the potential impact of the above on their wholly- owned subsidiary, Reef Magic Cruises (RMC) www.reefmagiccruises.com.au. RMC is a marine tour operator showcasing the Great Barrier Reef from its pontoon anchored 27 nautical miles off Cairns on the eastern edge of Moore Reef. References: Biggs, D. (2011).
